Governors hold off Ludlowe in Class L opener

The Wilbur Cross boys basketball team beat visiting Fairfield Ludlowe, 44-35, in the first round of the Class L state tournament at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on Tuesday night.

Seeded fourth, the Governors (19-4) stormed out o a 32-14 lead on Chan Williams Bey’s layup with 4:31 left in the third quarter.

Ludlowe, the No. 29 seed, roared back with a 15-4 run that lasted until the 2:30 mark of the fourth quarter, pulling the Falcons to within 36-29 on Stephen Scholz’s run-out layup.

But, Cross, which made just 7-of-19 free-throw attempts overall, connected on 6-of-10 down the stretch to avert the upset.

Williams Bey led the Governors with 12 points, while Joshua Fleming added 11.

Pat Gutierrez had a team-high 12 points for Ludlowe, which wrapped up its season at 9-12. Gutierrez scored 10 in the second half, while Mark Malone chipped in with nine.
