Fairfield teams up to gain league final

Based on a stronger than expected regular season performance, Fairfield High was moved up from an initial Division IV seeding into Division II for the Fairwest High School Squash League Championships held at Chelsea Piers March 2-3.

Fairfield scored wins over teams from Greenwich High and Darien High to reach the finals before falling to Bronxville.

Facing Bronxville High School’s varsity, Fairfield senior Alex Auer scored an impressive 3-0 victory playing at the No. 3 position, while Senior Alex Taylor pulled through with a 3-1 win at the #7 position.

At the No. 1 position, Fairfield freshman Graham Bonnell took the early lead 1-0 but after three more close games eventually fell 3-1.

Fairfield senior Tyler Gracon playing at No. 5, came up just short in an 11-6, 11-13, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9 marathon.

The final match series score was 5-2 in favor of the Bronxville Broncos.

In the first round of the championships on Saturday, Fairfield’s 5-2 win over Greenwich was highlighted by a dominant 3-0 victory by senior captain Aidan Burns at the No. 6 position, as well as a 3-1 win by junior Graham Brown playing at No. 3.

Fairfield’s 7-0 second-round win over Darien was much closer than the score would indicate.

Among the tight matches in the series were senior John Scarnavack’s 3-1 win at No. 6 and senior captain Aidan Burns’ five-game thriller at No. 5.

With the Fairwest League Championships, Fairfield concludes its fourth season of competition as a High School club.

The team is part of the Fairwest Public School Squash League (FWPSSL), sanctioned by US Squash and encompassing any public high school in Fairfield and Westchester Counties.
