Sacred Heart University sophomores Stephanie Guminiak of Suffield and Regan Kesting of Hyde Park, N.Y., work with a student at Central High School as part of a volunteer tutoring project.

Sacred Heart University’s Office of Volunteer Programs and Service Learning Program has implemented a new volunteer program with Bridgeport high school students.

This opportunity is part of a Saturday CAPT (Connecticut Academic Performance Test) prep program for Central High School students. The tutoring program aims to provide high school students with increased confidence in the areas of math problem solving and literacy and will take place on three Saturdays.

Sacred Heart students work with small groups of Central High students with a goal of providing a positive and warm learning atmosphere that builds self-confidence.

“Principal Anderson at Central High School has made a concerted effort to find projects for our students that both help his students and also accommodate the unique logistical needs of our students,” said Matthew Kaye, director of Volunteer Programs and Service Learning. “He genuinely appreciates the Sacred Heart volunteers, and students report back that they are having a positive experience and feel very welcomed at Central High School.”
