Prep sweep of NDWH earns SCC title

Dean Lockery and Tim Edmonds scored two goals each to lead coach Matt Sather’s top-ranked Fairfield Prep hockey team to the Southern Connecticut Conference Division I championship with a 6-2 victory over second-ranked Notre Dame of Fairfield at Quinnipiac University on Wednesday.
David White and Mike Ventricelli also scored goals, as the Jesuits improved to 20-1.
Matt McKinney, Ventricelli, Nick Bargiello, Connor Henry, Andrew Hatton and Sean Henry had assists.
Chris Gutierrez stopped 18 shots and Matt Beck made 10 saves against the Green Knights (15-5-1).
Lockery, who was named  the tournament’s most valuable player, opened the scoring with an unassisted short-handed goal at 4:02 of the first period.
Edmond’s first tally at 10:27 gave Prep a 2-0 lead after one period.
Notre Dame’s Matt Dumas halved his team’s deficit just over a minute into the second period, but White got that goal back two minutes later.
Lockery scored his second goal 1:37 into the third to make it 4-1.
Notre Dame’s Jesse Ryocco found the net at 5:43, before Edmonds (10:51) and Ventricelli (12:30) wrapped up the Jesuits’ sweep of the Green Knights, and gave Prep its second SCC title (1997).
