Kupchick, Lesko support bill to provide beverages and food in funeral homes

State Rep. Brenda Kupchick testified Feb. 20 in front of the General Assembly’s Public Health Committee in strong support for HB 5244, a bill introduced by state Sen. John McKinney and Kupchick, which allows funeral homes to provide their visitors with beverages.

Currently, funeral homes are not allowed to provide any beverages to their customers except water. Kupchick testified alongside constituent and business owner Kevin Lesko of the Lesko Polke Funeral Home in Fairfield.

“It makes perfect sense to me that funeral homes should be allowed to offer a warm cup of coffee, or tea to families as they go through the most difficult times in their life,” Kupchick said. “It can make this very difficult time more comforting, similar to how we offer a warm beverage to visitors in our homes.”

“I want to thank Sen. McKinney and Rep. Kupchick for their hard work on this legislation,” Lesko said. “After attending many of her Business Advisory meetings I saw this as the perfect opportunity of how government can be helpful to business and the community to find solutions.”

Kupchick views this legislation as an example of how government can listen to constituents and help find answers.

“I’m pleased to have introduced this bill along with Rep. Kupchick on behalf of Mr. Lesko,” McKinney said. “So often, the best ideas for common sense legislation come from our constituents. I applaud Rep. Kupchick for giving small businesses in our districts a voice through the Business Advisory meetings she has conducted over the past year.”

Kupchick commented on the practicality of the bill saying, “This bill is not intended to be an economic driver, nor a requirement, but rather a convenience for families as they go through very difficult times and for funeral homes to be able to offer simple hospitality.”
