The team that made this event possible are, from left, volunteer Patty Ford, Operation Hope Executive Director Carla Miklos, KADA CT President Myong Lee and volunteers Alexandra Waizenegger, Sharon Rehme and Gerry Monahan.

Ever wonder what happens to dry cleaning that does not get picked up? It went to Operation Hope, courtesy of the Korean American Drycleaners Association of Connecticut (KADA CT). On Jan. 30 and 31, Operation Hope opened its doors to shoppers who browsed among the 1,000 donated garments — all cleaned, pressed and ready to wear.

“People who stopped in and shopped were amazed at the quality and quantity of clothing that was never picked up at local dry cleaners,” said Gwen Burroughs, Operation Hope’s development administrator.

All proceeds from the sale of clothing support the on-going work at Operation Hope and its efforts to fight hunger and homelessness in the community. Several dry cleaners donated garments, including Superior Cleaners, Friendly Cleaners, Royal Cleaners, Post Cleaners and GQ Cleaners, all of Fairfield; Westport Cleaners, Magic Cleaners, Best Care Cleaner and Maple Cleaners, all of Westport; and Stratford’s New Robinhood Cleaners. Abbey Tent and Party Rentals supplied the coat racks for the event.

The Korean American Dry Cleaners Association of Connecticut (KADA CT) was formed 17 years ago by a small group of dry cleaning owners to help new businesses succeed and to strengthen existing businesses by giving them a place to trade ideas and keep up on current trends.

KADA’s new president is Myong Yong Lee, owner of Superior Cleaners in Fairfield and Stamford. He hopes to grown KADA CT in the coming years.

“I am proud to partner with organizations like Operation Hope that provide needed services to our community,” Lee said. “We hope our donation of clothing, gathered from various KADA CT members, will help Operation Hope continue its programs and services.”

KADA CT and Operation Hope are hoping to schedule another Dry Cleaning Shopping Day in the near future.
