New York man arrested for assault

Fairfield police arrested John Mara, 22, of Mount Kisco, N.Y., for first-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace for allegedly hitting a Fairfield man in the head with a bottle. The victim was hospitalized and faced surgery for his injuries.

Mara has been identified in published reports as the nephew of the owner of the New York Giants. Detectives investigating the conflict, which occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, described the victim’s injuries as serious and life-threatening. They were notified of the assault by St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

Reportedly, Mara and the victim were both students at Fairfield University and were attending a New Year’s Eve party on Fairfield Beach Road. Motive for the assault remains unclear.

Mara turned himself over to Fairfield police on Feb. 22, following a warrant for his arrest. He was issued a $150,000 bond and a March 8 court date.
