Hersam Acorn cartoonist gets own exhibit

Hersam Acorn editorial cartoonist Douglas Smith will have a showing of his cartoons that have appeared in the Fairfield Sun, as well as other local newspapers and publications. His original artwork will be on display in the Derby Public Library, 313 Elizabeth St., Derby, from Feb. 16 through March.

Smith, a Stratford resident, has been drawing professionally since 1984. In addition to Hersam Acorn, his cartoons have appeared in Hometown Publications (Shelton), The Champlain Valley News (VT), The Meriden Record Journal (Meriden), The Journal Inquirer (Manchester), Graphic Arts Monthly, The Whittenburg Door Magazine. He has also done free lance advertising illustration. For several years, he drew the weekly feature, “Rollie,” which appeared in Hometown Publication’s classified section.

He is a two-time recipient of The New England Newspaper Association’s award for editorial cartooning.
