Tragedy, Courage & Triumph

Fairfield County Day School Headmaster John Munro stands with guest speaker Travis Roy, after Roy spoke at the school about crashing into the boards while playing at Boston University and cracking his vertebrae leaving him a quadriplegic.

Pride, respect, positive attitude, and love, were some of the core values that Travis Roy shared with the Fairfield Country Day audience on Jan. 16.
Roy, author of Eleven Seconds, A Story of Tragedy, Courage & Triumph, gave a compelling speech to more than 200 people, who came to hear his message.
Travis recounted his aspirations as a child to one day play hockey at the collegiate Division I level, and perhaps the NHL.
With hard work and determination, he pursued his goals and in the fall of 1995 was thrilled to have achieved the first of these goals when he became a member of the Boston University National Champion men’s hockey team.
On Oct. 20, 1995, Roy proudly wore the BU Terriers jersey as he took to the ice in his first collegiate game — tragedy followed 11 seconds later — he crashed into the boards cracking his vertebrae leaving him a quadriplegic.
Roy spoke of the journey of realizing that who he was as a person and his values did not change as a result of the changes to his physical person.
It was these values that have helped him create a new life with new goals.
The FCDS audience responded to Roys’ story of courage with a long standing ovation.
He has established the Travis Roy Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission statement reads:
“…dedicated to enhancing the life of individuals with spinal cord injuries and their families by providing adaptive equipment and to finding a cure through increased funding of research, resulting in self-reliance and the ability to be as independent as possible.”

Fairfield Country Day School is a private, independent school for boys in grades pre-K through 9.
