White, Butala honored by SCC

David White and Tim Butala from Fairfield Prep have been named The SportsCenter of Connecticut/Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Athletes of the Month for December.
Now in its seventh year, The SportsCenter of Connecticut/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month program will honor outstanding young men and women each month during the 2012-13 academic year.
David White
A senior captain on the Jesuits ice hockey team, White has been an exceptional performer in the classroom, achieving magna cum laude honors in all four of his academic years. He is also taking college level mathematics courses at Fairfield University during his senior year.
White supports the Storm Hockey program, in which he mentors challenged children in ice hockey and is a member of the Peer Tutor program, where he assists other students with their studies.
Prep varsity hockey coach Matt Sather said: “David is a leader both on and off the ice. He has earned the respect of his peers and the faculty through his hard work and enthusiasm.”
Tim Butala
A team captain on the Jesuits boys basketball team, Butala has shown a strong commitment to academics and athletics.
He has achieved summa cum laude honors in all of his years and is a member of the National Honor Society, as well as being named a National Latin Exam Scholar.
During his junior year, Butala received an achievement award in math and sciences sponsored by Fairfield University’s Engineering Department and Sikorsky Aircraft.
He serves as a Peer Tutor and assists at the Mercy Learning Center in Bridgeport.
Prep varsity basketball coach Leo Redgate said: “Tim is a very unselfish person. I have witnessed him helping a friend who is struggling in a class, and then ten minutes later working patiently with a younger teammate at practice to improve their skills on the basketball court. He is the epitome of what Prep strives for when educating its students.”
SCC Commissioner Al Carbone said: “Many thanks to the Sports Center of Connecticut for its support of the SCC and the Scholar Athlete of the Month program.
“This conference has been proud of its success for the last 18-plus years, and to be able to recognize outstanding young men and women who demonstrate the desire and ability to succeed solidifies what the SCC is all about.”
Student athletes who are selected must be a varsity letterwinner and have a 3.0/B average while demonstrating leadership qualities.
Sports Center of CT/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month recipients and receive a certificate, commemorative tee-shirt and a SportsCenter of Connecticut activity pass.
