Fairfield resident helping others glow

Most people agree that tanning beds or too much sun exposure is dangerous to our skin’s health. The American Cancer Society agrees: Skin cancer is the most common cancer in America.

Fortunately for people who love the sun-kissed look of a year-round tan, one can be had without exposure to damaging UV rays.

The sunless revolution has introduced a healthy alternative to harmful rays with spray-tanning solution. Lynne DeAddio recently started her Fairfield-based spray-tanning business, Glo Mobile LLC, when she was looking for a career that would allow her the flexibility she needs as a full-time, single mother to two young children. She was looking for work where she could keep her kids as her No. 1 priority.

“I’m a very lucky girl. I get to reinvent myself, move onto phase two of my life,” DeAddio said. “The timing has just been right; everything has aligned … the sun, the moon, the stars.”

After 15 years in New York City in the fashion industry, DeAddio doesn’t want to be a slave to a job, but she loves helping others feel beautiful. She found a way to combine her love of everything related to fashion, beauty, self-esteem, and fitness.

“It’s like you put it all together and write a story,” DeAddio said.

DeAddio first learned about the spray-tanning world four years ago from friends who were competitive in body building and fitness competitions. She started her small business venture to keep men and women looking and feeling their best. Glo Mobile has the answer for keeping your skin fresh, healthy and radiant with ease.

DeAddio is a self-confessed sun-lover herself, who loves the look of a healthy glow, and that’s how the company’s name was born. Although she still loves to enjoy the sun in the summertime, she now believes that too much tanning can be bad for the skin.

Tanning beds are just as harmful, and salons’ spray-tanning, in which a client steps into a machine and hopes for the best, are very “hit or miss.” That’s why DeAddio was so excited when she experienced the difference of an airbrushed, personalized spray-tan.

Although practitioners are not required to be certified, DeAddio received training and certification through Norvell Skin Solutions LLC, which continues to develop and manufacture technological breakthroughs in the sunless industry.

According to studies and DeAddio’s experience, a spray-tan is not skin damaging. The principal tanning agent used in all self-tanning formulas is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This ingredient does not produce a “real tan” by increasing the skin’s melanin levels; rather it creates a tanned appearance by developing a brown color on the surface of the skin.

The action of DHA is limited to the upper layer of the skin and involves a reaction among DHA, skin proteins and oxygen that produces brown compounds. This process is similar to what occurs when an apple is sliced and the surface of the apple browns when it’s exposed to the oxygen in the air.

DeAddio explained that spray-tanning is even safe for pregnant women and children, as long as people hold their breath and close their eyes while being sprayed on the face. It’s important to know that a spray-tan does not give any UV protection, though.

The best part about Glo-Mobile is that the prices are reasonable and the whole experience is painless and private. A client can either come to DeAddio’s home or have the tan brought to them with the help of Glo-Mobile’s portable pop-up tanning tent. And there’s no need to totally disrobe if you’re uncomfortable; you can wear undergarments for a natural “tan line” look.

“I have a lot of respect for my clients. They always seem so comfortable in their own skin,” DeAddio said. “And the service is super-private. We can make it work for each individual.”

Before being sprayed, it is best to shower and exfoliate to create the best possible canvas for the tan. The spray tan will last approximately a week depending on an individual’s skin characteristics, and will fade slowly as the top layer of the skin naturally exfoliates.

DeAddio said women concerned about appearing orange after a spray tan need not worry with Glo-Mobile.

“Norvell products give you a warm glow, especially now as we are entering such a cold and gray season,” DeAddio said.

A large portion of Glo-Mobile’s business comes from competitive body-builders, bikini models and cheerleaders.

“My goal is to completely function off of this,” she said. “I’m looking to expand more into the fitness angle and would love to get into fitness competitions as the sole spray tanner at events.”

DeAddio recognizes her own strengths and said she loves finding a way to combine all of her worlds and talents into doing what she does best, which she described as “relationship management.” She has a relaxed and welcoming spirit that reflects her self-described ability to relate to people and make them feel good about themselves.

“I really wanted to do something I love this time. I have the best of all worlds right now. It’s fun; I’m kind of like a bartender. I get into 20-minute intense dialogues with clients about husbands, relationships, what matters in life,” DeAddio said. “If you look good, you feel good. That’s what matters — in your own eyes.”
