Car takes out utility pole

Fairfield police are investigating an accident along Collingwood Drive that destroyed a utility police and left the driver’s car demolished. Police have not yet released the driver’s name as the entire incident is under investigation.

Police said the vehicle appeared to have failed to navigate a curve in the road. It skidded across Collingwood Avenue, jumped a curb and slammed into a utility pole.

The pole snapped at the base and the vehicle kept going. The car eventually came to a rest on Lookout Drive.

The operator told police he did not need medical attention. The front of his vehicle was smashed and the right front tire was resting in the roadway.

Police said they noticed an odor of alcohol and the driver was unsteady on his feet. They ordered he be sent to St. Vincent’s Medical Center for evaluation.

The investigation continues and charges may follow.
