Pequot Library announces new book club

Pequot Library announces its new book club, Beyond the Book Club. Taking inspiration from Pequot Library’s founder, Virginia Marquand, this book club focuses on both women and Pequot Library’s mission of “bringing literature, music, art, science and the humanities to our community.”

The club is open to everyone and will meet 11 times a year. Participants can come to one program or all of them. There will be book discussions plus practical applications such as related workshops or viewing and discussion of movies.

Beyond the Book Club kicks off with the movie, Little Women, on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013, 7 to 9 p.m. The next program will be Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. This will be a book discussion on the historical fiction book, March, by Geraldine Brooks, whose character, Mr. March, taken from Alcott’s Little Women, is the absent father gone off to war leaving his wife and daughters to make do in difficult times and the new biography, Marmee & Louisa: The Untold Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Mother, by Eve LaPlante. Here book club participants will be able to compare and contrast historical fiction and non-fiction.

Beyond the Book Club offers a workshop on creative writing, entitled “Influential Women Who Shape and Inspire Our Lives and Our Writing,” on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to noon. The program will be led by award-winning author, artist and speaker Adair Heitmann.

April will feature a science/archaeology theme about Mary Anning, a British fossil collector, dealer and paleontologist who became known around the world for a number of important finds she made in the Jurassic marine fossil beds at Lyme Regis in Dorset, where she lived. The books discussed will be The Fossil Hunter by Shelley Emling and Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier.

September will feature “History: Civil War” and November’s theme will be “Art: Women in the 19th Century,” with dates to be announced.

Registration is required for these free programs; contact Marianne Pysarchyk at 203-259-0349, ext. 19, or [email protected]
