Hoop Shoot winners meet

Fairfield Warde High School will be the site on Sunday, Jan 13, where town champions in the district will compete for a shot at a state title in the Elks’ National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest.  The contest will start at 9:30 a.m.
Winners in their local contest from the Elks’ Coastal District, which comprises all the towns from Greenwith to Branford, along with Danbury and Derby, will all take 25 free throws to determine their group champion who will then be entered in the state finals to be held in New Britain in February.
Six winners will be crowned in each of the three boy and girl categories, 8-9 ages, along with 10-11 and 12-13 year olds.
In the state contest, they will compete against their counterparts from the other state districts in the Elks’ geographical setup.
State winners advance to New England finals, where successful shooters advance to the national championship to be held in Springfield in April.
Local champions who will represent the Fairfield Elks lodge, host to the event, are: 8-9 year-olds Clare Edminster and Matthew McMurray, 10-11s Tricia Carey and Owen Edminster and 12-13 group winners Christiana Cottrell and Will Lucas.
Former locals to reach the national finals were Cathy McGillicuddy, Dan Pangrazio, J.D. Fetcho and Matt Doyle.
