Lifelong Patriots fan turns Brady autograph into tattoo

Megan Uhrynowski has long been a fan of Tom Brady.

In her opinion, no one has played football better than the New England Patriots quarterback.

“I’ve literally loved him as long as I’ve seen him,” said Uhrynowski, 19, a Stratford resident who attends Sacred Heart University.

It’s fair to say she loves the future Pro Football Hall of Famer even more now, as Brady’s own writing is a permanent feature on Uhrynowski’s left arm.

Uhrynowski, a former Bunnell High School softball player, attended a Patriots preseason practice on July 30 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. She received tickets from her mother’s boss, who is a Patriots season ticket holder. Uhrynowski took the trip with Gary Sherrick, an assistant softball coach at Stratford High School. Sherrick works with his wife Jackie, the SHS softball head coach and Uhrynowski’s former coach at Bunnell.

“She gave [the ticket] to me as a birthday gift. We had a great time,” Gary said. “It just proves that my wife does something well and years later, I’m the first person Megan thinks of to go to a Pats practice with.”

Gary Sherrick and Uhrynowski made it to the stadium early and made it to the front row, a prime location for fans to seek autographs from Patriots players.

As groups of fans shouted for players to come over and sign things for them, Gary and Uhrynowski had a funny idea. Gary said if Brady or Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski signed her arm, she would turn the signature into a tattoo.

So as the players came to sign footballs, cards and other items for fans, Gary and Uhrynowski called on the stars. Gronkowski came toward them and then walked away. Brady, however, came close by.

“I said ‘Hey, Tommy!’ and [Brady] waves. ‘She said if you sign her arm, she’ll get a tattoo.’”

Uhrynowski said she did not expect Brady to honor her request.

She repeated that she’d get a tattoo of Brady’s signature. As Uhrynowski recalls, Brady heard her, smirked and didn’t say anything.

Then, he signed her left arm. A day that was already great by seeing her footballing heroes up close became legendary with a few strokes of a marker from the game’s top quarterback.

“I freaked out. I started screaming. I was literally shaking and hysterically crying,” Uhrynowski said. “Even in the car riding home, I was in shock.”

She also kept to her promise and went to Inksplosive, a tattoo shop in Milford the next day, to get Brady’s signature made into a permanent mark. She took photos of the tattoo and posted them on social media. Boston media outlets took note as did Patriots fans from all over.

While some might say her actions are a bit extreme for a fan, Uhrynowski has no regrets over her tattoo.

She has even received kind words from friends of hers who are New York Giants fans.

The signature “shows he’s just an awesome guy and an awesome dude and an all-around good person,” Uhrynowski said.

Yvonne Gaughan, the Inksplosive tattoo artist who worked Uhrynowski’s tattoo, noted how excited she was when it came time to create the artwork. Gaughan had to reproduce Brady’s tattoo in a slightly smaller version and in a different location due to a request by Uhrynowski’s parents, she said.

“This was the first famous autograph I’ve done. Like I told her, it was pretty cool, but I’m a Giants fan,” Gaughan said.

Gaughan added that she would have loved to get a tattoo of Cyndi Lauper if she was Uhrynowski’s age.
