Pequot Library hosts college fair

Leveraging the Arts in the College Process, a panel discussion will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23, from 7-8:30 p.m., at the Pequot Library 720 Pequot Ave., Southport.

How do you build a story that differentiates you from the pack? You can let music and the arts be an important part of that narrative. This workshop is designed to help students learn how to use their artistic assets to enhance their college applications and make those applications stand out.

The panel discussion is tailored to high school students who want to continue their music studies in college, either as a major, a minor, or simply for fun. The panel will address how to leverage students’ musical skills in the application process, discuss critical issues concerning financial planning, and review the importance of preparing recommendations, résumés, and recordings. The panel also will explore the many ways in which one can pursue music within the college community as well as how that participation can help build networks, open the door to opportunities, and elevate the college experience.

The evening’s moderator is Candace Channing, founder of Channing College Consulting. She is an internationally acclaimed flutist and master flute instructor who is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, with a bachelor’s degree of Music in Flute Performance and Literature and a concentration in Psychology.

The Panel will include:

Joseph F. Bogardus, ChFC®, LUTCF, AIF® CFP® With a strong passion for music and a board member for Music for Youth, he is a graduate of the University of Richmond. Joseph has a degree in finance and management and focuses on helping families find strategies and plan for college years.

Marissa Caro has 20 plus years of experience performing in and directing Musical Theater productions. She has been seen on stage at Lincoln Center and on Broadway as well as on stages around the country as part of Broadway National tours. Marissa studied Classical Voice at the Juilliard School and Musical Theater at Pace University.

Lindsay LaRusso attended Juilliard Pre-College as a Trumpet major before going on to study History at Harvard. After teaching History and English in a variety of educational environments while also working part-time for Channing College Consulting, Lindsay joined Channing College Consulting full-time in 2016.

Lauren LaRusso attended Juilliard Pre-College as a French Horn major before going on to study American Political Theory and Political Ethics at Amherst College. After receiving her Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction and teaching English at Darien High School for four years, all while working part-time for Channing College Consulting, Lauren joined Channing College Consulting full-time in 2016.

Lindsey Ogilvy graduated from UNC Greensboro as a flutist and Music Education major. Upon graduation, she taught with Mary Ann Hall’s Music for Children before accepting a full time position teaching beginning instrumentalists in Westport, CT.

Tristan Rais-Sherman is Assistant Conductor of the Syracuse Opera, Orchestra Director at the Special Music School at the Kaufman Music Center, and Founder and Artistic Director of the Stamford Orchestral Institute. He is a conductor, cellist, educator, guitarist, and songwriter whose eclectic skills and tastes make him a unique, young musical talent working in the NYC/CT area.

Curt “Corky” Stewart (Dartmouth ’67) first blew into a cornet at the age of three, and music has been a cornerstone of his life ever since. A retired Hewitt Associates partner and US Air Force Captain, today, amongst numerous activities, he is a member of the Westport Community Band, Wesleyan University Wind Ensemble, Board Chairman for Open Doors in Norwalk, Board Chairman for the Norwalk Hospital Volunteers and a member of the Norwalk Hospital Board of Trustees.
