Little League: Fairfield American advances to Section final

For a team that is used to hitting home runs and scoring a lot of runs, it was small ball that got it done for Fairfield American on Wednesday night at Scalzi Park in Stamford.

Fairfield defeated Weston, 1-0, in the first game of the Section I Tournament. Fairfield American then went on to beat Milford, 10-0, in four innings on Thursday to advance to the Section I championship on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Against Weston, It was a pitcher’s duel and the one run that Fairfield scored was on an error.

Scoreless through 3 1/2 innings, Fairfield plated the game’s only run in the fourth.

Robbie Donahue led off the inning with a single to right field. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Gavin McGuire laid down a bunt up the first base line and the throw to first was high allowing McGuire to reach.

A walk to Dustin Walters loaded the bases and that set up Timmy Donahue’s safety-squeeze bunt down the first-base line. Pitcher Dylan Delaney fielded it, but his throw to the plate was off-target — allowing Donahue to come in to score.

Fairfield tried to tack on another run on the play but Aidan Gouley, who re-entered for McGuire, was tagged out at home trying to come around from second on the errant throw.

Fairfield American, which had six hits, was led by Donahue, who had two.

Will Meyers threw five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. He walked none and struck out eight batters.

Charlie Yates allowed just a walk in a scoreless sixth to pick up the save.

Ben Landesman started for Weston and threw three scoreless innings.
