Ludlowe-St. Joseph game story

The Fairfield Ludlowe boys basketball team fell behind St. Joseph High before putting forth a furious come back that fell short in Trumbull on Monday night.
“It’s tough chasing them [from behind] because you know they’ll make their free throws,” Falcon coach Brian Silvestro said after the 59-51 setback. “We prepared pretty well, but you have to give St. Joe’s credit. You can prepare for the press, but they still make you pay.”
The Cadets (2-0) used its pressure to turn a 13-11 lead after one period into a 28-16 game at the half.
Junior guard Mark Malone scored seven points to help Ludlowe win the third quarter, 14-7, and close the deficit to 37-30 with one period to play.
Malone and Patrick Gutierrez nailed consecutive 3-pointers before the Cadets’ Johnny Dzurenda answered with one of his own to make it 42-36.
Darren Lee banged home a shot from the corner and Connor Peterson scored off the boards and it was 46-40 with 3:55 remaining in the final frame.
Peterson put in a nifty baseline baby hook and turned a strong drive into a three-point play.
The Cadets led 49-45 with two minutes left to play.
Ludlowe closed within 51-49 on Gutierrez’ bucket from the elbow and Malone’s pull-up jumper with 1:21 left in regulation.
McKnight (19 points) drove around a screen set by Erick Langston to earn two made free throws, and after rebounding a Falcon miss, went to the line and drained two more foul shots.
“They really shot the ball well in the second half,” St. Joseph coach Chris Watts said of Ludlowe. “In the first half we were lucky enough to find [the shooters].
“They came out in a 1-3-1 zone in the third quarter and that slowed us down. We were lucky enough to make the adjustments against a very well-coached team.
“Ludlowe plays the game the way its supposed to be played.”
Stephen Scholz and Gutierrez had four points each in the first quarter before the Cadet defense made things difficult in the second stanza.
Malone had four of his 15 points in this session, and Gutierrez hit a jumper.
Danny Santella did a good job against pressure in the third quarter, and the senior drew a charge on McKnight to spur the Falcons’ rally.
Malone’s trey behind a screen from Lee and Gutierrez drive off a quick pass from Peterson completed a 9-0 Ludlowe run and the Cadets called time with a 35-30 lead with 1:31 left in the third.
Gutierrez finished with 12 points and Peterson 11.
Ludlowe defeated Trumbull High, 30-25, in its season opener.
Peterson scored 11 of his 13 points in the final quarter, when the Falcons closed the game on a 16-3 run.
Gutierrez scored eight points and Lee had five.
Ludlowe will join Warde and Notre Dame at the Fairfield Prep Christmas Tournament on Dec. 26 and Dec. 28.
