Teacher charged with sexual assault

A teacher and swim coach for Staples High School in Westport was arrested by Fairfield police following allegations of sexual assault. Jeffrey Schare, 43, of Palamar Drive, Fairfield, surrendered himself to police on Dec. 17 at 7:15 a.m.

Schare coached the Staples Wreckers swim team for seven years as well as taught math. He resigned from his position in November as allegations that he sexually assaulted two under age girls began to surface.

Fairfield Police Sgt. Suzanne Lussier would not comment on the exact ages of the victims but indicated they were both under 16. Both are reportedly students in Fairfield and not at Staples where Schare taught.

According to police, Schare may have been grooming one of the victims for as long as three years. The older of the two victims came forward in November to a school counselor who notified the authorities.

The counselor and police identified a third-party who claimed to have knowledge of supposed abuse but had not come forward with information. Police talked to the as-of-yet unnamed party on Nov. 16 and were told she would not provide the victim’s name.

While Lussier would not identify the third-party, she did note that under the law this person was considered a mandatory reporter and was legally obligated to notify the Department of Children and Families within 12 hours. The law defines a lengthy list of mandatory reporters, many of which would be positions of influence or authority over a child.

The mother of one victim contacted police on Nov. 17 and scheduled a forensic interview through The Center for Women and Families. She gave a sworn statement on Nov. 20.

Both victims were interviewed and gave details that covered a span of years. Schare has since sought the services of an attorney and chosen not to speak with police. Police said Schare is currently staying at a Rock Ridge Road address listed to a Dr. George Schare.

Warrants were issued and his home searched. Electronic devices have been seized for the investigation.

Schare has been charged with first-degree sexual assault, attempted third-degree sexual assault, third-degree sexual assault, fourth-degree sexual assault and injury, risk or impairing morals

According to Lussier, Schare did not make his $150,000 bond and has been taken to court for his arraignment.
