Rally falls short

The Fairfield Ludlowe boys basketball team fell behind St. Joseph High before putting forth a furious come back that fell short in Trumbull on Monday night.
“It’s tough chasing them [from behind] because you know they’ll make their free throws,” Falcon coach Brian Silvestro said after the 59-51 setback. “We prepared pretty well, but you have to give St. Joes credit. You can prepare for the press, but they still make you pay.”
The Cadets (2-0) used its pressure to turn a 13-11 lead after one period into a 28-16 game at the half.
Junior guard Mark Malone scored seven points to help Ludlowe win the third quarter, 14-7, to close the deficit to 37-30 with one period to play.
Connor Peterson’s three-point play made it 49-45, but St. Joseph’s Quincy McKnight scored nine of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter, including six straight free throws in the final two minutes.
Patrick Gutierrez scored 12 points and Peterson 11.
