JWC of Fairfield to sponsor town-wide spelling bee

Junior Women’s Club of Fairfield hosts the 36th annual town-wide Spelling Bee for Fairfield fifth graders on Monday, May 14, at 7 p.m., at Roger Ludlowe Middle School.

Each elementary school in town will host their own mini Spelling Bee in school to down select to 38 young participants who will compete for top honors at Roger Ludlowe Middle School.

Continuing a three-decade tradition, the Junior Women’s Club of Fairfield will once again host this event. The top three winners will receive prizes donated by the Fairfield JWC and several corporate sponsors, including a gift certificate donated by Saugatuck Sweets for the 1st place winner — 3 months of a 2-scoop ice cream cone per week.

The JWC welcomes back returning judges John Kovach, editorial director HAN Network, and Andrea Canuel, associate director for Service Learning at Fairfield University. A welcome addition to the judge’s panel will be Tamara Lyhne, head of Children’s Services at Fairfield Public Library.

In addition to the Spelling Bee, the JWC of Fairfield hosts a “A Visit to Santa’s House” in December, the proceeds of which benefit the club’s charitable CARE partner, as well as local scholarship recipients. The club also hosts community service projects and social events throughout the year. To learn more about the club, visit jwcfairfield.com. The club can also be found on Facebook.
