Fairfield Democrats honor members

On Sunday, April 22, the Fairfield Democrats honored two members for their service to the town and to the Democratic party during the annual Century Club Brunch.

Fairfield’s First Selectman, Mike Tetreau, served as Master of Ceremonies for the sold-out event, which was held at The Patterson Club. Speakers and honored guests in attendance included U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy, Congressman Jim Himes, Secretary of the State Denise Merrill, CT Democratic Party Chairman Nick Balletto, CT Attorney General George Jepsen, State Comptroller Kevin Lembo, Fairfield DTC Chairman Steven Sheinberg, several State Representatives, Democratic candidates running for statewide office, and many more.

Honored were State Representative, HD 133, Cristin McCarthy Vahey and Molly Baker, president of the Ludlowe Democrats. Cristin McCarthy Vahey was the recipient of the Eunice Postol Award, given annually to a Democrat who has long exemplified the undying dedication to community service that Eunice Postol provided. Molly Baker was honored with The Denise Dougiello “Young Turk” award, which honors a newer member of the Fairfield DTC whose contributions are helping to shape the future of our town.

About the Honorees:

State Representative McCarthy Vahey

State Representative McCarthy Vahey began her elected service in 2005 as a three-term member of Fairfield’s RTM. She served as Deputy Moderator and Minority Leader, helped run the town-wide campaign in 2009, and received the Denise Dougiello “Young Turk” Award in 2010 for her outstanding leadership and contributions to the town. She became a member of the Board of Selectmen in 2011 and in 2014 was elected State Representative for the 133rd District. She now serves as Majority Caucus Chair for the State Assembly and serves on the Education, Transportation and Government Administration, and Elections Committees.

Representative McCarthy Vahey has held leadership roles with the League of Women Voters, PTA, Girl and Boy Scouts, National Charity League, and her church council. She helped to establish and then served as co-chair of Fairfield Cares Community Coalition, and serves on the board of Politica CT.  A social worker and active community volunteer, McCarthy Vahey has long supported local non-profit agencies including The Center for Family Justice and Operation Hope of Fairfield, whose critical services support the most vulnerable in our community. An active member of the Fairfield DTC, McCarthy Vahey is a consummate campaigner supporting her fellow Democratic candidates.

Molly Baker

Molly Baker, is a senior at Fairfield Ludlowe High School (FLHS) and President of the Ludlowe Democrats. She has been an active campaigner for Democratic candidates in every Fairfield election over the past four years. Baker is dedicated to community service, volunteering as a S.T.A.R. peer educator for Planned Parenthood and with Builders Beyond Borders. During her summer vacations, Baker has volunteered in Guatemala, Ecuador, and Nicaragua helping build classrooms, a medical clinic, and a community center. Earlier this April, she again volunteered in the Dominican Republic helping to build an agricultural center.

Baker was one of two FLHS students invited to participate in a recent roundtable in Greenwich on gun violence hosted by U.S. Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal. At FLHS, she helped coordinate the March 14 student-led day of protest against gun violence, working with school administrators to ensure safe, peaceful student participation in the national school walkout.

Baker plans to attend Boston University in the fall where she will major in economics and political science.
