About the Honorees:

The Eunice Postol Award

Presented annually to an individual who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to community service, this year’s Eunice Postol Award is presented to State Representative Cristin McCarthy Vahey who was previously awarded the Denise Dougiello Young Turk award in 2010.

Representative McCarthy Vahey began her elected service in 2005 as a member of Fairfield’s RTM, where she served as Minority Leader. She became a member of the Board of Selectmen in 2011 and in 2014 was elected State Representative for the 133rd District. She now serves as Majority Caucus Chair for the State Assembly.

Representative McCarthy Vahey has held leadership roles with the PTA, Girl and Boy Scouts, National Charity League, and her church council. She helped to establish and then served as co-chair of Fairfield Cares Community Coalition, and serves on the board of Politica CT.  A social worker and active community volunteer, McCarthy Vahey has long supported local non-profit agencies including The Center for Family Justice and Operation Hope of Fairfield, whose critical services support the most vulnerable in our community. She is a member of the Fairfield League of Women Voters and is actively involved in the Fairfield DTC.

The Denise Dougiello “Young Turk” Award

The “Young Turk” award honors a newer member of the Fairfield DTC whose contributions are helping shape the future of our town.

This year’s honoree, Molly Baker, is a senior at Fairfield Ludlowe High School (FLHS) and President of the Ludlowe Democrats. She has been an active campaigner for Democratic candidates in every Fairfield election over the past four years. Baker is dedicated to community service, volunteering as a S.T.A.R. peer educator for Planned Parenthood and with Builders Beyond Borders. During her summer vacations, Baker has helped build schools and a medical center in Guatemala, Ecuador, and Nicaragua. In April, she will again volunteer in the Dominican Republic during her spring break.

Baker was one of two FLHS students invited to participate in a recent roundtable in Greenwich on gun violence hosted by U.S. Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal. At FLHS, she helped coordinate the March 14 student-led day of protest against gun violence, working with school administrators to ensure safe, peaceful student participation in the national school walkout.

Baker plans to attend Boston University in the fall where she will major in economics and political science.
