Man collects rent on house that's not his

A 40-year-old woman living on Fleming Lane received unpleasant news over the weekend: The house she had been renting since November was rented to her illegally.

The current owner contacted Fairfield Police when she noticed an unusual spike in the electric bill at what is her parents’ former home. They died in February and the house has been abandoned and on the market since. The home is now owned by their daughter and son.

The woman renting the home said a man going by the name Randall Hill rented it to her for $900 a month, with a one-month deposit and last month’s rent also required. She gave him $2,700 and moved in on Nov. 2.

But Hill never gave the renter a key until Dec. 2, and even then the key he delivered didn’t work.

Police could not elaborate on how the woman was able to enter and leave the home.

Hill has since disappeared.

Police are investigating and want to speak with both children of the original owners.
