Warde’s Alex Steele champion, Mustangs take second

Fairfield Warde wrestling continued its strong season with a second-place finish at the FCIAC Championships.

Coach Jason Shaughnessy’s Mustangs, ranked third in the state, placed 13 out of 14 wrestlers to score 202 points.

Senior Alex Steele, in thrilling fashion, claimed the FCIAC title at 132 pounds and was recognized as FCIAC Most Outstanding Wrestler in the lower weight classes.

Kris Gjinaj (152 pounds), Izaake Zuckerman (160 pounds) and Joe Gjinaj (195 pounds) took second.

Anthony Zarlenga (145 pounds) and Dan Mundle (220 pounds) placed third.

Nate Cuoco was fourth at 126 pounds.

Cole Shaughnessy (120 pounds), Noah Zuckerman (138 pounds), John Summers (182 pounds) and Alec Nardone (heavyweight) wrestled back to earn fifth.

Reber Shukri was sixth at 113 pounds.
