Book and media categories include fiction/classics; mystery; biography; history; cookbooks; lps; children; cds/dvds/other media; signed books; vintage magazines and more. Find rare and obscure folk and folk-legacy albums, plus a small section of Connecticut-themed books.

Doug Fried, the volunteer chairman of Pequot’s book sales and the 2017 Fairfielder of the Year, said, “Our mid-winter sale is the first part of our ‘Triple Crown’ of book sales for the year, and one of my favorite. Working in a much smaller venue than our marquee summer sale, we offer many categories of books as well as LPs. We have a large supply of CDs and DVDs which are a popular element of the Mid-Winter Book Sale thanks to a large donation.”

Fried continued, “ . . . and probably the most special element of the sale is our mid-day live music, from 1-2:30 p.m. each day featuring Mark Naftalin and friends — world-class music, by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame pianist Mark Naftalin, who is accompanied by 11 other accomplished performers. It was more than 10 years ago when Mark wandered into the book sale on a snowy day and asked if he could play the Library’s (then) 110-year-old Steinway grand piano. He mentioned his stint with the Paul Butterfield Blues band, so I thought we’d give him a shot . . . his two-hour improvisation that day was really something magical, and we’ve been incredibly fortunate to have him back each year—now with some backup. ”

The musicians are Paul Gabriel — guitar and vocals; Chance Browne — guitar, harmonica, and vocals; Daniel J — guitar, harmonica, and vocals; JD Seem — guitar and vocals; Mark Zaretsky — harmonica and vocals; Manny Foglio — harmonica and vocals; Peter Menta — harmonica and percussion; Crispin Cioe — saxophone; David Anastasia — bass; David “Bobo” Lavorgna — upright bass; Barry Urich — drums; and Mark Naftalin — piano. WPKN Independent Community Radio (89.5 FM is the Media Sponsor for this book sale and will broadcast live from Pequot Library both days.

All proceeds benefit Pequot Library’s literary and cultural programs and services, art exhibitions, town-wide community events, music concerts, author talks, summer reading programs for children, and book discussions for adults.

If the Library is closed for a snow day on Saturday or Sunday, the book sale will resume on Monday, Feb. 19.
