Fairfield students perform in Norwalk Symphony competition

The Norwalk Symphony Orchestra will host its sixth Young Artists’ Festival on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 27 and 28, at the Norwalk Concert Hall, 125 East Avenue in Norwalk. This festival is open to music students of all levels and instruments who have at least two years of study and have not yet graduated high school.

The festival offers four different levels which serve to encourage and recognize young musicians in Fairfield County. Additionally, the festival will host a Concerto Competition which is open to all instrumentalists through high school. Eight students who successfully completed a video round will participate in the Live Final Round on Sunday.

Festival chair Becki Christopherson said, “The primary purpose of this festival is to give young musicians the opportunity to perform in the context of the greater Fairfield County musical community. Opportunities like this did not exist in Fairfield County prior to our festival, but are common throughout the country.”

Fairfield residents participating are cellist Leonardo Manzone and violinists Leila Mishalani and Harry Graney Green. Leila and Harry passed the video round of the Concerto Competition. They are two of the eight finalists who will compete in the Live Final Round on Sunday. Teachers whose students are participating include Southport resident Nina Crothers and Fairfield resident Adrianne Greenbaum. Crothers teaches violin, and Greenbaum teaches flute.

The Festival culminates in the Concerto Competition Finals open to the public, Sunday, 5:15-7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and $5 for students. The winner, announced that evening, is awarded the opportunity to perform as soloist with the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra at its Music for All Ages Concert on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 3 p.m., at Norwalk Concert Hall.

Next month NSO’s A Night of Romance: Broadway Love Songs at Norwalk Concert Hall will be presented on Feb. 10.
