Fairfield teams meet for Nutmeg title

The Fairfield Cardinals recorded an impressive 14-4 win over Fairfield American Legion in the third round of the 2012 Nutmeg State Games at Beehive Stadium in New Britain.

The offense exploded for 13 hits in the rain-shortened five-inning game, led by Connor Quinn (Ludlowe), who went 3-for-4.

The pitching combination of Trevor Turgeon (St. Bernard) and Jake Gepfert (Fairfield Prep) scattered six hits and struck out four.

The Cardinals went right to work scoring three runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning.

Victor D’Ascenzo (Ludlowe) had a leadoff double, followed by singles from Charlie Meder (Ludlowe) and Aaron Marks (Warde) and two-run triple by Andrew Kirkpatrick (Warde).

Frank Vartuli (Staples) finished the scoring with an RBI single to left field.

Cardinal pitching held Fairfield Legion in check over the next three innings, allowing one hit while the defense remained solid.

The Cardinal offense didn’t let up — scoring a run in the second inning, four in the third inning (keyed by a two-run triple by Meder) and six in the fourth inning, including a two-run single by Quinn and RBI singles by Meder and Vartuli to take 14-0 lead.

Five Cardinals finished with multiple-hit afternoons.

Fairfield Legion plated four runs in the fifth inning on a two-run single by Dario Pugliano (Warde) and a two-run double by Tim Moran (Ludlowe), before the rains came and ended the game.

Lance Kreizer (Warde), Matt Lilly (Ludlowe) and Alec Jacobs (Warde) handled the pitching duties for Fairfield Legion.

“I was proud of how the boys responded after last night’s tough loss,” Cardinal coach Liam Ohlmann said.

“They came ready to play and it showed both offensively and defensively.”

The Cardinals improved to 14-10 after going 2-1 in the Nutmeg State Games.

The Cardinals defeated Trumbull (7-0) in the first round and lost to the Connecticut Dirt Dogs (4-2) in the second round.
