Football: Bridgeport Central holds off Ludlowe, 46-44

The Bridgeport Central defense twice took over on downs in the fourth quarter when the Hilltoppers held off a Fairfield Ludlowe rally to win a 46-44 decision at Taft Field in Fairfield on Thursday night.

Dimitrie Ivey scored three touchdowns and ran in four two-point conversions to lead coach Michael Farrell’s Hilltoppers, now 2-7.

“Give their kids (Ludlowe) credit. They were down and I thought they were down for good and they kept coming back,” Farrell said. “Ivey is the leader of the team, no question. I’m happy for him because of his preparation during the week in practice.”

Josh Evans threw three touchdowns passes to Aidan Wycoff for coach Mitch Ross’ Falcons (1-8).

“We came back. We are down by twenty six in the fourth quarter and we came within a pass of catching up and winning this game,” said Ross. “They (Central) probably outweigh us about one hundred pounds at each position in the line. We knew we were going to have to score points.”

Ludlowe recovered an onsides kick to open the game.

Kevin Quinn completed a 48-yard drive with a 1-yard TD run. Wykoff caught a pair of 22-yard passes from Evans in the series.

Central came right back to take the lead.

Jean Desir ran 33 yards for the touchdown and Ivey’s conversion run gave the Hilltoppers an 8-6 advantage with 6:41 left in the first quarter.

Ludlowe re-took the lead on the ensuing drive.

After catches of 22 yards by Ethan Beri and 38 yards by Wykoff, Quinn scored his second 1-yard touchdown with 5:30 left in the first quarter.

Evans connected with Mike Logan for the two-point conversion to make it 14-8.

After Ludlowe turned the ball over on downs at the Central 30 on a fake-punt pass that was incomplete, the Hilltoppers took only two plays to tie the game.

Ivey’s 67-yard run set Central up at the Ludlowe three-yard line, where Steven Alvarez punched it in.

The two-point conversion was no good, and the Hilltoppers and Falcons were knotted at 14 with 8:46 left in the half.

Central took the lead at 22-14 on Ivey’s 1-yard run and his two-point carry with 2:35 remaining in the period.

The score was set up by Desir’s 49-yard reception to the Ludlowe two-yard line.

Ludlowe cut into the deficit when Evans found Wycoff for a 10-yard TD with 29 seconds left in the half. The two-point try was no good and Central led 22-20 at the break.

Central, following a pair of interceptions, extended its lead in the third quarter.

Alvarez picked off a pass at the Central 20-yard line and brought it back to the Ludlowe 10.

That set up Ivey’s 1-yard touchdown and two-point conversion carry.

After Bjiou’s interception return went for 27 yards to the Falcon’s three-yard line, Central quarterback Alfred Fleming scored on a keeper from a yard out with 5:16 left in the third.

Ivey’s fourth two-point conversion run put Central on top, 38-20.

Ivey scored again, this time from 25 yards out with 17 seconds left in the third quarter.

Central converted the two-point conversion when Fleming connected with Bijou for a 46-20 lead.

Ludlowe cut into the deficit early in the fourth quarter.

Wycoff caught a 22-yard touchdown pass with 11:22 remaining.

Evans keeper on the conversion cut the Central lead to 46-28.

The Falcons got closer when Jake Northrop picked off a pass and brought it back 50 yards for the touchdown with 9:51 left.

Quinn ran in the two-point conversion to make it 46-36.

Ludlowe got within two after Wycoff caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Evans with 6:15 left and Quinn took a direct snap for the two-point conversion.

Central’s 26-point lead was down to two, 46-44.

Ludlowe would have two more opportunities, but Central held on downs to ice the game.

Ludlowe will host Warde on Thanksgiving at Taft Field at 10:30.

Central finishes the season on Thanksgiving when it hosts Harding High at Kennedy Stadium at 10.
