Hanging around the gym with Dr. Oz’s trainer

Donovan Green of Fairfield knew what it was like to be overweight. Now he knows what it’s like to train one of the nation’s most recognizable health experts, and what it’s like to work near home.

Green, a Fairfield resident, has been teaching a TRX Pilates class for one month at the Fairfield Pilates studio downtown.

Cait Lyddy of Weston, owner of the studio, is thrilled to have him.

“There is such an endearing quality about Donovan. He is extremely motivating and that is what makes the class so great,” Lyddy said.

The TRX class provides an extreme cardio workout while also balancing the body. Green incorporates a fusion routine that involves two partners constantly working together while using suspension trainers, which hang from the ceiling, for 45 minutes. He uses a timed interval technique during his classes while encouraging deep breathing; he refers to the difficulty of the class as “tough love.”

“Donovan makes TRX come alive, he makes you want to give 200%,” Lyddy said. “He is also easy to understand and has a great sense of humor, which doesn’t hurt.”

Green admitted he was overweight when he was younger. Around the age of 13, his uncle got him started in martial arts. He fell in love with the sport, and began to realize that he could channel his newfound athletic ability into bigger and better things. Through pursuing weight training and gymnastics, Green began to realize his passion for fitness.

The young Jamaican-born trainer juggled several occupations, such as plumbing and carpentry, all while owning a gym in the Bronx called The Six Elements of Fitness. His goal was to use this gym in order to combat obesity in lower-income communities.

Through training the celebrity doctor’s wife, Green was also able to connect with Dr. Oz, who has been seen on the Oprah Winfrey Show and made famous through his own television show. Green trained Dr. Oz in New Jersey three times a week, but since has taken on Fairfield as his new venture.

Green also accepts invitations to speak to audiences about nutrition at local businesses and organization, and preaches his love for fitness at all times.

“The class is all about enjoying your time and having fun. Everyone expects a scary boot camp, but they all end up coming back!” Donovan joked.

“I like the session because it is an intense calorie burn for a short period of time,” said Sonya Coonan on Norwalk, attending her seventh class on Sunday, July 22.

“I am a personal trainer, and had I not taken this class I wouldn’t have half the strength I do now,” Coonan said. “I have noticed a definite improvement in my personal strength.”

The Fairfield Pilates studio offers a single class of TRX for $27, $234 for a package and $80 for a private session with Green. Owner Cait Lyddy urges anyone interested to visit the online website for other class options. Donovan Green may also be contacted by email at [email protected]
