Football: Max Garrett honored for defense

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference has announced that Washington and Lee University’s Max Garrett has been named Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 28.

Garrett, from Fairfield out of Choate Rosemary Hall, plays linebacker and helped lead W&L to a 17-14 come-from-behind win at Randolph-Macon on Saturday to improve the Generals to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play, tied atop the league standings with two games remaining.

Garrett made the play that set up the W&L offense to score the game-winning touchdown with just 38 seconds remaining.

Garrett finished the contest with a season-best 14 tackles and one interception as the Generals’ defense held the Yellow Jackets to 26 points below their season average.

R-MC was facing a 3rd-and-8 from its own 33-yard line when Garrett intercepted a pass at midfield and returned it to the Macon 39 with 2:51 remaining.

W&L scored 10 plays later to take the lead for the first time since the second quarter.

For the season, Garrett is the ODAC’s leading tackler with 77 total stops. He also has two interceptions.

Garrett ranks fifth nationally among active Division III players with 344 career tackles.
