Flynn and DeWitt, getting it done year after year

To the Editor:

Politics are a minefield lately. It is increasingly difficult for our elected officials to accomplish anything due to partisanship, party vitriol and mistrust across the aisle. More than ever, I vote for people who manage to get things done in the face of this maelstrom of negativity that is the political arena these days.

Tom Flynn and Chris DeWitt, who are both running for re-election to the Board of Finance, are two elected officials who are getting it done, year after year.

Tom has been a long serving and well respected Chairman of the BOF. His steady hand has guided Fairfield through choppy financial waters, and he presides over meetings which are full of constructive debate but never discord. Tom’s experience as a CPA gives him a keen understanding of the fiscal issues facing Fairfield, and he is able to communicate his expertise in a way that a layperson can easily understand.

Chris has served on the BOF with distinction for over a dozen years. He has served as Chairman of a town-wide committee investigating how Fairfield funds its nonprofit partners, and made sensible recommendations so that all private organizations providing services for the town would have an equal chance to make their case for funding. He has also been an invaluable member of the BOF Budget subcommittee, which has streamlined the town budget process and made it more transparent and accessible to the public.

I have been privileged to work with both Tom and Chris on the BOF, and I am fortunate to call them friends. Fairfield is in good hands due to the work of Tom, Chris and their BOF colleagues. Fairfield’s pension is fully funded, our AAA credit rating has been preserved, education and other services have been largely untouched. Very few other towns, and certainly not the state, can say the same. I trust Tom and Chris to continue to navigate our town through the financial challenges yet to come. They have my support and my vote.

Robert Bellitto Jr.

Former vice chairman, Board of Finance
