Kiley endorses Democratic RTM candidates

To the Editor:

Local elections are less than a month away and I hope that Fairfielders have started to learn about the candidates’ positions and prior accomplishments.

As a District 3 resident, I heartily endorse our Democratic slate of candidates for Representative Town Meeting. Heather Dean, Matt Jacobs, Doug Jones, and Sharon Pistilli will bring a substantial range of skills and experience in order to strike the balance between affordability and quality of life that makes Fairfield such a special place to live and raise a family.

Parents of school-age children, seniors, all Fairfielders, can be confident that Heather, Matt, Doug and Sharon will work diligently for bipartisan solutions that will secure the future of our town.

Kevin Kiley

Selectman, Town of Fairfield

Mr. Kiley, not to be overly critical, but what exactly is it that these candidates will do? Let’s look at some facts for a moment. nnRight now, Fairfield is going through an economic crisis, as is most of the state. Longtime residents are leaving town, and businesses are following suit. There’s a simple answer to the question of why this is happening; sky-high taxes. Yet, Democrats like yourself wish to raise taxes to an even higher level, and enact new taxes as well. nnIn case you’ve been away for the past month, let me remind you that Hartford legislators passed a GOP-proposed state budget. This plan would’ve fully funded our public schools, and done it without raising taxes. However, Governor Malloy refused to give it the time of day. Why do you think that is? nnThe choice for my fellow Fairfielders in this election is clear. They can either continue the one-party, failed policies of Democrats, or choose a new and prosperous future with Republicans. On Election Day, let’s make a wise choice.

Matt, in case you are not aware, local budgets in Fairfield (and therefore tax rates) are greatly affected by our Board of Finance. The BoF has been republican controlled for decades (currently a 6-3 republican majority). If you blame Fairfield’s “sky-high taxes” on any party, it has to be on the one that has held that majority, does it not? Therefore, if you are unhappy with taxes, you really have no reason to blame Democrats when Republicans control the BoF and the RTM. nnMy platform is one of financial responsibility and long-term sustainability. There are actions we can take that will spur growth and allow us to maintain the high quality of life in Fairfield without pricing out our citizens.nnPlease find me on facebook, or contact me at [email protected] if you would like to discuss.
