Pequot Library: Family Day —Home Front on the Great Lawn

On Sunday, Oct. 15, from noon-2 p.m. discover what life was like for families on the home front during World War I with hands-on activities for all ages on the Great Lawn of Pequot Library. Families can “support the war effort” by collecting war bond stamps on a scavenger hunt, view classic cars, listen to a Victrola record player, plant a victory garden, play period lawn games, take a tour of Pequot’s Special Collections exhibition, The Great War and the United States Home Front, and enjoy cider, coffee, and doughnuts. Free and open to the public. Weather permitting.

Ambulance 255, a 1916 Model T Ford ambulance will be on view. It is representative of the 1,200 ambulances that were donated by Americans and driven by American volunteers for three years in France before the United States entered World War I. The chassis, engine, and drive train are all original 1916 parts that have been correctly and accurately fitted. The only new exterior parts of the rolling chassis are the sheet metal and radiator. Local residents Gwen and Parker Ackley’s 1915 Dodge Brothers Touring Car that was recently featured in the new PBS movie The Chaperone will also be on view, along with costumed WWI soldiers and nurses. Children can make a toy biplane and play hoops, hopscotch, leapfrog, and other period games.
