Charlie Capalbo named Cohen Courage Award winner

Charlie Capalbo will be honored by the Fairfield County Sports Commission.

The Fairfield County Sports Commission announced today that Fairfield resident Charlie Capalbo is the 2017 Chelsea Cohen Courage Award recipient.

The graduate of Ludlowe High, who was the goalie for the Fairfield co-op hockey team, was diagnosed with cancer in March.

Capalbo will be honored at the Commission’s 13th annual Sports Night awards dinner Monday, Oct. 16, at the Stamford Marriott at 6 p.m.

The Fairfield County Sports Commission created the Chelsea Cohen Courage Award in 2006. It is named after the late Chelsea Cohen, a former Norwalk High soccer star who was the Commission’s first Courage Award recipient and passed away in 2006 after a courageous bout with a rare form of cancer of the nervous system.

The award recognizes the person in the sports community who has shown inspirational strength in battling life-altering obstacles.

Capalbo led the Fairfield hockey team to its first-ever appearances in the FCIAC and Division I state tournaments. Immediately following the season, he learned he had been playing with a
fast-growing cancerous tumor in his chest and has since been undergoing intensive treatment at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital for non-Hodgkin T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (a rare form of leukemia).

Friends have set up a GoFundMe page for the Capalbo family to help defray the major expenses associated with Charlie’s treatment, which is scheduled to last for 36 months.
