Two Fairfield men killed in boating accident

Two Fairfield men died in a boating accident off New Haven early Sunday, Aug. 27.

A witness reported a 32-foot boat overturned and a person in distress in the Long Island Sound near New Haven Harbor around 9:15 a.m. Sunday.

Coast Guard swimmers pulled 46-year-old Scott Trautman of Fairfield from the water, unconscious. He later died at an area hospital.

The body of the boat’s owner, 53-year-old Michael Murphy of Fairfield, was recovered 11 and one-half hours later, around 8:45 p.m.

According to published and broadcast reports, the bow of the boat was damaged and it overturned near a breakwater, although the cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
