World Series: Texas defeats Fairfield American, 6-3

Fairfield American dropped a 6-3 decision to Lufkin, Texas in the winner’s bracket semifinals at the Little League World Series in Williamsport (Pa.) on Sunday.

Southwest champion Texas, led by the pitching of Collin Ross, the home run hitting of Christian Mumphery and the defensive play of Kolby Kovar, advance to the United States bracket semifinals on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Fairfield will play Northwest champion Walla Walla, Washington in an elimination game on Monday at 8 p.m. (ESPN2).

Fairfield, the New England champions, scored its three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Texas had scored in the bottom of the first after a Chandler Spencer triple and a wild pitch.

Owen Kalagher reached on an error and scored on Leo Randazzo’s double to left field.

Christian Smith came in to pinch run, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Ethan Righter’s RBI grounder to third base.

Fairfield had threatened in the first.

Righter beat out a swinging bunt and Matt Vivona doubled one out later.

Ross struck out the next two batters.

A right-hander throwing in the major-league equivalent of mid-90s, Ross gave up the four hits in the first two frames.

He retired nine straight before Righter reacher on a strikeout/wild pitch with one out in the fifth inning.

Ross then set down the next five batters and finished with a five-hit, nine-strikeout, no-walk performance.

Michael Iannazzo got the start and pitched to his limit for Fairfield, before Tyler Bauer pitched the fifth.

Christian Mumphery hit a two-run home run in the Texas second to tie the game at 3.

He added a solo shot in the fifth.

Kovar made a great play on Iannazzo’s attempt for an extra-base hit in the second, with a twisting catch in left field.

Kovar did himself one better when he went to the wall and made an outstanding catch on an Iannazzo blast to save a run after Righter reached base in the fifth.
