The next presentation of the Fairfield Happiness Club, “How important is having a sense of meaning in life to happiness?” by Lawrence Rifkin, M.D. will be held on Thursday, Aug. 17, from 7-8:45 p.m., at the Fairfield Public Library, 1080 Old Post Road.

While there are a lot ways to explore happiness, this talk will take a different approach — taking a look at the question of personal meaning. Happiness is more than just a feeling or a mood — it also comes from an understanding of one’s connection to others, one’s relationship to the big picture, and from a sense of belonging.

The talk will touch on the whole gamut of the idea of meaning, and its interconnections: from finding meaning through personal experience and deep awareness, to finding meaning through connections to other people and cultures, to finding personal meaning in the context of the cosmos.

In addition this talk and discussion will focus on questions of the meaning in life. How important is having a sense of meaning to personal happiness? How central is community, culture, and relationship to personal meaning? How can one understanding our own personal meaning within grand scientific understanding of evolution and the universe?

Lawrence Rifkin is a physician and a writer, winner of the Grand Prize Doctors’ Writers’ Contest. His published articles and videos explore the intersection of human meaning, science, humanism, and well-being.

Everyone is welcome; admission is free.
