Fairfield native J.J. Henry wins PGA event, earns spot in PGA Championship

Fairfield native J.J. Henry posted his second PGA Tour victory Sunday, and with it earned a berth in this week’s PGA Championship.

Henry won the Reno-Tahoe Open, posting a score of 43 points in the Modified Stableford System. Henry beat Alexandre Rocha by one point.

Rather than tracking a player’s relation to par, the system awards 8 points for a double eagle, 5 points for an eagle, 2 points for a birdie, 0 points for a par, -1 point for a bogey and -3 points for a double bogey or worse.

It was his first PGA Tour victory since he won the 2006 Buick Championship at the TPC at River Highlands in Cromwell.

Sunday’s win grants Henry a 2-year exemption on the PGA Tour.

He also earned a spots in this week’s PGA Championship, the final of four majors of the 2012 season, at Kiawah Island, S.C. The PGA Championship will be televised on TNT and CBS Thursday through Sunday.

As winner of the Reno-Tahoe Open, Henry will start his first round on the 10th tee at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, and his tee off his second round on the first hole at 9:20 a.m. Friday.
