When have Democrats ever stopped spending?

To the Editor:

While the Democrats and their cheerleaders at most local newspapers are entitled to their boasting and gloating over the local and national election results, though no one was actually surprised, I have to wonder what it is about the State of Connecticut’s fiscal situation that would make them happy and why would they expect any politician to fix it.

“Gov. Malloy’s budget chief told the state legislature on Nov. 14, that Connecticut is facing a $365 million deficit for this fiscal year … more than six times what Malloy had estimated before the election … . And Democrats, who hold the majority in both state houses, voted to postpone the release of the fall consensus revenue forecasts … until after Nov. 6” (Jillian Kay Melchior, “Connecticut’s Fiscal Mess.” National Review Online, Nov. 18, 2012).

Ms. Melchior also notes further fiscal foolishness about our state.

“In 2011, Democrats passed record-breaking tax increases [on everything!] to the tune of $2.6 billion in two years … . Connecticut Tax Freedom Day is now May 5, the latest in the nation … ranking Connecticut third in the nation for highest combined state and local taxes … . The Tax Foundation ranks Connecticut 40th in the nation for the tax climate for business … . The state’s tax revenue — for the fourth consecutive time — has fallen short of the governor’s projections … . And earlier this year, Barron’s named Connecticut the worst-run state in the nation … . Government analysts now project that in fiscal year 2014, Connecticut will face a $1.1 billion budget hole.”

However, never fear! According to the governor’s senior advisor, Roy Occhiogrosso, “The governor will cut spending, and he will not increase taxes. We will end the year at balance.”

Seriously?

As an overtaxed resident of the state, I would like to believe that fantasy, but those of us with common sense know it will never happen. When have Democrats at any level in this country ever stopped spending our money?
