LETTER: RTM Democrats doublespeak

To the Editor:

In last week’s letter to the editor, Minority Leader Phil Pires (D-4) characterized actions by the RTM’s Republican majority in taking steps to reduce budgetary spending as the “definition of fiscal irresponsibility.”  This, while as in years past Mr. Pires and his fellow Democrats sought only to rubber stamp the town budget when it came before the RTM.  Seriously?  I can’t imagine that the irony of that characterization would be lost on any tax payer in the Town of Fairfield.

Mr. Pires then went on to use terms like “disingenuous” and “short sighted” in describing the decision to hold the budget’s contingency line flat year-over-year on a percentage basis. This is because Mr. Pires (as he himself admits) had hopes of possibly reallocating contingency funding sometime later in the year for non-contingency spending items already voted down by both the Board of Selectmen and the Board of Finance.

RTM Democrats seem unable to come to grips with the fact that increased spending has become a problem for Fairfield. In spite of the erosion of home values in town and business exiting both the town and the state, they are unwilling to recognize the adverse effect of higher taxes. They continue to bury their heads deeper in the sand. During the town budget meeting, Representative H. Dean (D-3) publicly admitted that in taking the temperature of constituents she filters out emails from the Fairfield Tax Payers advocacy group. That admission unfortunately is a metaphor for the deaf ear that RTM Democrats have turned towards Fairfield citizens struggling with higher taxes.

The fact of the matter is that RTM Democrats have managed to convince themselves that increased spending and higher taxes is a non-issue, and they are unable or unwilling to address it. They have left it to RTM Republicans to do the necessary work of analyzing the budget and making the difficult choices.

Democrats will make accusations, but the truth of the matter is that RTM Republican have acted responsibly, and it is the inaction on the part of the Fairfield Democrats that has fulfilled the definition of irresponsibility.
