Boy Scout Troop 82 celebrates Memorial Day

Leading up to this Memorial Day weekend, Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 82 joined a local veterans group at St. Thomas Cemetery in placing fresh American flags on the graves of those who had service in the armed forces.

“The purpose of Memorial Day is not to have picnics, miss a day from school and watch a parade,” noted Troop 82 Scoutmaster Bryan LeClerc.  “It is to honor those men and women who gave their lives for our country while serving in the military.  We owe these heroes our respect and honor.  Thanks to them, we live in freedom today.”

In addition to flag placement, Troop 82 will have the honor of being the Scout representatives at Saturday mornings Sea Ceremony at the South Benson Marina. The event will begin at 9:30AM with Troop 82 performing the Flag Raising Ceremony at the entrance to the marina complex on Turney Road.  Following the Flag Ceremony, Troop 82 will join the dock side Sea Memorial hosted by Port Five Naval Veterans.

At 10 a.m. on Monday, May 29, Memorial Day, the Scouts of Troop 82 will lead the town of Fairfield in the annual Memorial Day parade with their color guard.

Troop 82 has been an active Boy Scout Troop since the 1920’s at The First Church Congregational in Fairfield, Connecticut, where it meets every Thursday evening at 7:30pm.  Troop 82 believes in learning while having fun.  Scouts learn to be better American citizens, to develop the mental and physical skills needed for growth, and to follow a set of Scouting principles which build character and nurture personal values.
