Greens Farms Academy wrapping up season

Kate Paliotta (Westport) and Steph Wistreich (Wilton) scored four goals each and Ella Murphy (Darien) added three more when the Dragons ended their regular season with a 16-4 win over Hamden Hall.

Wistreich had two assists while Paliotta (10 ground balls) added one for GFA.

Fran Devita, Lucy Holzinger (Norwalk), Alex Nesi (Fairfield), Bella Litt (Darien) and Caroline Rintoul (Darien) added single goals for the Dragons.

Sarah Peltier (Stamford) had an assist, as did Litt.

Kelly Van Hoesen (Greenwich) made two saves while playing the first half.

Kaitlin Reed (Southport) stopped three shots playing the second half.


The Greens Farms Academy baseball team ended its season with one of its biggest victories in years, notching an 8-2 victory over perennial FAA power Brunswick School in Greenwich.

Mack Muller (Westport) was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Tim Mira (Stamford) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Sean Hogan (Westport) had a double and two RBIs while James Velgot (Weston) had a hit and an RBI.

Velgot also had the defensive play of the game, robbing a Brunswick player of a home run.

Michael Canning (New Canaan) pitched four innings, striking out three with a walk.

He gave way to Mira, who earned the win in relief, while Peter Donovan (Old Greenwich) capped off the game.

Earlier in the week, Hogan went six innings, striking out five, as the Dragons fell 5-3 in another tight loss to Rye Country Day.

Mira had an RBI for GFA.

The Dragons traveled to St. Luke’s on May 8 and fell to the Storm by a 9-2 score.


Girls tennis

The GFA girls varsity tennis team defeated Masters School at GFA by a score of 7-0.

It was Senior Day and all six seniors played and won their final match at GFA.

Playing doubles, seniors Blaire Marine (Darien) and Alexis Messina (Old Greenwich) won 8-3; Katie Metro (Westport) and Brynley Close (Norwalk) won 8-4; and Lauren Ritchey (Darien) and Lily Goldsmith (Darien) won, 8-1.

Junior Devon Wolfe (Darien) won 8-0, freshman Sarah Wagner (Westport) won 8-1, freshman Ryan Boyle won 8-3 and junior Kate Flicker (Fairfield) won 8-2.

Earlier in the week, the Dragons fell by a 4-3 score.

Wolfe won 6-1, 6-2, Wagner won 6-3, 6-0, and  2 singles Sarah Wagner (freshman, Westport) defeated Grace Coale 6-3, 6-0 and Messina and Marine won 6-2, 6-2.

Boys tennis

The Dragons rebounded from a pair of losses last week with a convincing 7-0 win over Millbrook.

GFA won the doubles points with wins by the No. 1 doubles team Matt Smith (Purchase, N.Y.) and Connor McDonald (Westport) 8-4, followed by an exciting win at second doubles from sophomore Jack Wolfsohn (Easton) and freshman Aidan Helfant (Old Greenwich) 9-7.

Leading the singles sweep was senior Will Wappler (Rowayton) at No. 1 singles pulling out a 6-4, 7-5 victory followed by McDonald’s consistent play earning a 6-4, 6-2 win.

The Dragons were on the road, falling 4-1 to Hackley.

The lone win came from the No. 2 doubles team of freshman Jack Ramsay (Darien) and Marcus Ng (Greenwich), who won 6-2, 6-4. 

The team lost its first match of the week to Hopkins by a 6-1 score.

The Dragons’ sole victory came at No. 1 doubles, played by Smith and Helfant who played as a team for the first time this season.

Track and field

The Greens Farms Academy track and field team competed in the two-day Hillhouse Invitational in New Haven.

The invitational offered medals to the top three finishers in each event.

In the freshman division, eighth grader Caroline McCall (Westport) and freshman Charlie Bohnsack (Darien) placed first in the 1600, (5:46 and 5:22, respectively); freshman Laila Pina (Weston) placed second in the freshman 400 (1:15) and eighth grader Samantha Freeman (Milford) placed third in the freshman 100m dash (15.14). 

The upperclassmen also did well. 

Junior Nick Attai (Bridgeport) won gold in the 3200 (11:18), MJ Freeman (Milford) grabbed gold in the 400 (50.47) and bronze in the 100 (11.71), Will McCall (Westport) finished 2nd in the 1600 (4:58), sophomore Kristiana Modzelewski (Westport) placed third in the 100m hurdles (19.44).

In the field events, senior Olivia Sullivan (Norwalk) placed first in the high jump (5′ 04″) and third in the long jump (16′ 00″). 

The Dragons will end their season at the NEPSTA Division III Championships at Cheshire Academy.


The Dragons trailed 9-2 entering the seventh inning, but Lucy Nelson (Westport) hit a grand slam in the gap and made a game of it late in the defeat.

GFA left the bases loaded twice and left runners on second and third one other time as it struggled to come up with the big hit.

Nelson was 3-for-4 in the game as was Maddy Canning (New Canaan), who had a single and two doubles.

Leah Attai (Bridgeport) added two hits while Vivian Taylor (Easton) and Alyssia Getschow (Westport) had singles.

Boys lacrosse

The Dragons threw a balanced scoring attack at King, but defensively just couldn’t stay with the Vikings and dropped its regular season finale.

Liam Murphy (Westport) led GFA with three goals while Ethan Haas (Darien), Charlie Benson (Darien) and Will Byrne (Darien) scored two goals apiece.

Zach Liston (Wilton) scored once and helped set up four other tallies while Ian Epps (Darien) also scored and David Hoffman (Westport) had two assists.

Goalie Ryan Pilkington (Weston) made seven saves.

Earlier in the week, GFA lost to Brunswick by a 13-7 score.

Byrne scored four times against the Bruins while Ryan Caione (New Canaan) added three. Liston added an assist.

Pilkington made eight saves.
