Devlin works with UConn students

State Rep. Laura Devlin (R-134) participated in a working session with students in the Connecticut Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (CT LEND) program on effective advocacy communications at the State Capitol.

“What a fabulous program. This was a great way to help teach these students how best to communication, articulate and advocate for a specific policy concept in front of state legislators,” said Rep. Devlin.

The intent of the working session was to learn how to best communicate with legislators so that they can be effective advocates as they work in their respective fields. The aim of the group work is to deliver an issue around disability and then you would give feedback on what works well and what doesn’t work well when someone is trying to advocate and meeting with their legislators.

The Connecticut Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (CT LEND) program provides interdisciplinary leadership training aimed at improving the health of infants, children and adolescents who have, or are at risk for developing, neurodevelopmental and other related disabilities, with an emphasis on autism spectrum disorders.

The class includes students from special education, nursing, speech and language pathology, audiology, public health, social work, and human services, as well as parents. The UConn UCEDD is the State of Connecticut’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Education, Research, and Service (UCEDD).  The UCEDD’s activities are guided by a belief in individualized supports, inclusion, self-determination, natural supports and collaboration with organizations to address policy issues and systems change for people with disabilities and their families.
