RTC endorses Ed Bateson as selectman candidate

On the evening of Tuesday, March 28, the Fairfield Republican Town Committee unanimously endorsed Ed Bateson as its selectman candidate for the upcoming special election.

Selectman Chris Tymniak seconded the nomination for Ed Bateson.

Below is the nominating speech made by Michael Herley, RTC vice chairman:

Members and friends of the Fairfield Republican Town Committee, I am honored this evening to nominate Ed Bateson to serve as our candidate for Selectman.

Mr. Bateson has served the Town of Fairfield with much dedication and valor over the past 15-years.

Mr. Bateson is a lifelong Fairfielder who attended our public schools and he has a daughter in our school system.

Mr. Bateson holds a degree in accounting from our very own Fairfield University and like many of us in this room—he is a successful small business entrepreneur.

What distinguishes Ed from many others in Town government is his encyclopedic knowledge of our town and its finances. He has a common-sense approach to government—a government that is committed to providing top-notch schools, recreational opportunities, and a quality of life for our seniors, all while not taxing us out of our homes.

If you would indulge me for a moment, I would like to share with you a passage from Edmund Burke, the famous political theorist who served in the British Parliament, which I believe speaks to the type of Selectman Ed will be and why we need someone with his acumen, judgment and approach to government:

“It ought to be the happiness and glory of a representative to live in the strictest union, the closest correspondence, and the most unreserved communication with his constituents.

“Their wishes ought to have great weight with him; their opinion, high respect; business, unremitted attention.

“It is his duty to sacrifice his repose, his pleasures, his satisfactions, to theirs; and above all, ever, and in all cases, to prefer their interest to his own.

“But his unbiased opinion, his mature judgment, his enlightened conscience, he ought not to sacrifice to you, to any man, or to any set of men living.

“Your representative owes you, not his industry only, but his judgment; and he betrays, instead of serving you, if he sacrifices it to your opinion.”

It has been said before that if a man does not stand for anything he will fall for everything. Unlike his opportunist political opponent, Ed Bateson is a man of principle.

Not only is Ed the right person to be our Republican nominee for Selectman—he is the right person to provide the proper “check and balance” to the “tax and spend” policies of First Selectman Mike Tetreau and Gov. Dan Malloy.

I hope you will join me tonight in supporting my good friend and trusted colleague Ed Bateson to be the Republican candidate for Selectman. Thank you very much.
