Portrait of Martin Luther

Martin Luther, Rebel Priest was written and composed in 1983 by famed American composer and lyricist Carmino Ravosa (1930-2015) to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Luther’s birth. A lifelong music educator, Ravosa was an author and editor for Silver Burdett & Ginn’s music textbook series World of Music and The Music Connection. Ravosa also was the songwriter for the CBS children’s shows Captain Kangaroo and Romper Room, the PBS program Shining Time Station, and the PBS publication Sesame Street Magazine.

Vividly, and with historic integrity and humor, Martin Luther, Rebel Priest brings to life the story of Martin Luther’s reformation challenge to the Roman Catholic Church in 1517. This performance marks the first time the musical has been publicly performed in 34 years. It has been performed only twice before — in 1983 at Ravosa’s home congregation, Emanuel Lutheran Church in Pleasantville, N.Y., and by students of the Dalton School in New York City, where the composer taught at the time.

Free and open to the public, the April 2 performance will be followed by a reception featuring German-style refreshments. A free-will offering will be collected, with proceeds to benefit Operation Hope.

Our Saviour’s is located at 160 Hill Farm Road in Fairfield. For more information, contact the church at 203-255-0545 or visit oursaviours.net.

Note to Editors: Please contact Will Thoretz at 203-912-5192 if you are interested in interviewing Claire Ravosa, widow of Carmino Ravosa, for personal reflections on her husband’s career and the story behind the writing of this historical musical.
