LETTER: DTC believes they can sidestep town charter

To the Editor:

I recall reading somewhere that “any time a vacancy occurs on the Board of Selectmen, including First Selectman, a replacement, who shall be registered with the same political party as the person vacating the office, shall be designated by the remaining Selectmen.” If you had guessed that “somewhere” was Fairfield’s Town Charter you’d be right!

That language would on its face seem simple enough for anyone of us to understand. That process for filling vacancies is straightforward enough, and it is essentially the same process for all boards in the Town of Fairfield. It is a process which has been followed by the town for many years and it was put in place for good reasons. The Democrat Town Committee had no objections to that process for Democrats now serving on the Board of Finance who are serving out remaining terms for other Democrats.

So let’s just come right out and say what we all know to be true, the Democrat Town Committee’s petition to force a special election for selectman was nothing more than an attempt by the DTC to circumvent the town charter. They can march around the town green as much as it pleases them, they can pretend that they represent the will of the people. The democrat appointed Town Attorney can even tell us (remarkably) that “vacancy” in this case means vacancy for something other than the unexpired term of office, but all this is nothing more than an attempt at an end around. Being in the minority on the board of selectmen is a new experience for them, they don’t like it, and now they are trying to regain control because they believe they can sidestep the Town Charter. It’s as simple as that.
