Wrestling: Fairfield Warde third at State Open

Tim Kane won his third State Open title and Fairfield Warde placed third.

The Fairfield Warde wrestling team completed the State Open with a third-place showing.

Danbury High won the team title, followed by Newtown, Warde and Southington.

Each on the Mustang’s seven qualifiers won at least two matches for coach Jason Shaughnessy.

“Tim Kane (138-pound champion) continued his success with a third Open championship in his fourth Open appearance in the finals,” Shaughnessy said.

“Alex Steele pushed through some ongoing shoulder injuries to finish sixth in a strong (132-pound) bracket.

“Matheus Riberio (170 pounds) was the underdog of the day. He pinned six wrestlers and finished fifth

“Matheus and Tim will move on to compete at the New England Championships (in Boston) this weekend. The third place finish ties Warde’s best finish (third in 2014).”

Noh Zuckerman was 3-2 at 120 pounds.

Cole Shaughnessy (113 pounds), Joe Gjinaj (182 pounds) and Matt Cuoco (195 pounds) each went 2-2.
