Wrestling: Warde surges to earn second at FCIACs

Fairfield Warde took home five indibidual titles and placed second as a team at the FCIAC championships.

Fairfield Warde wrestling used a strong performance in the FCIAC finals to edge Trumbull High for second place behind team champion Danbury High at New Canaan on Saturday.

Coach Jason Shaughnessy’s Mustangs won 5 out of 6 finals matches to out point the Eagles.

Tim Kane won his fourth conference title with his third pin of the day at capture the 138-pound title.

Kane set a state record with his 122nd win by fall and was named Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Alex Steele took the 132-pound title with a 9-2 victory in the finals.

Izaake Zuckerman controlled his 152-pound finals bout via 1-0 decision to take home the title.

Joe Gjinaj used a five-point move in the third period to win 8-6 and become an FCIAC champion.

At 195 pounds, Matt Cuoco needed a win to move the team to second place.

He escaped in double overtime to win 7-6 and become Warde’s fifth FCIAC champion.

At 120 pounds, Noah Zuckerman placed second after losing in the finals to nationally-ranked Jakob Camacho of Danbury.

Matheus Ribeiro wrestled back to earn third place at 170 pounds and finished 3-1 on the day.

At 113 pounds, Cole Shaughnessy went 2-2 with two falls to place fourth.
