Dismayed by actions of Selectmen Tymniak and Bateson

To the Editor:

Instead of wrapping presents and baking cookies, in the days before Christmas I spent my spare time helping to circulate and promote a petition for a special election to fill the remaining three year term on Fairfield’s Board of Selectmen, as vacated by Laurie McArdle.

When I first heard about this petition I was thrilled that Fairfield registered voters would have the opportunity to make their voices heard. In my opinion, it’s ideal to have an elected official in elected position, especially with a large amount of time remaining on the term.

All of my neighbors and friends that I approached in person signed the petition with enthusiasm, and when I heard we had collected over 3,200 signatures I was elated.

In a political climate where national issues seemed out of my control, it was comforting to know that that the will of the people would be respected and preserved locally.

I am dismayed by the actions of Selectman Chris Tymniak and Selectman Ed Bateson to amend the resolution that set the special election date. Their blatant disregard for the democratic process and the will of the people of Fairfield is shameful.
